Totally fun! There used to be a race that you would start in your swim suit in a cell...they would blow the whistle and you would all run out of the cell block, down the island and jump off the pier...then swim in to shore...never did that one, but would have been a total riot! I wanted to do that swim since I was 7 or 8 when I used to stand at the front of the boat when we could go out there on class trips...I always wanted to jump off...Savannah would love it, it's a great place to check out!

hey Charlie: I am impressed that you swam to alcatraz (6 times). I mean, usually people would die if they tried to escape from that jail. But even though you didn't get in jail I am still impressed that you swam there. Savannah (9) My daughter! She really wants to go there :)

Thanks Dalia! It's tough to come to terms with parents...sometimes forgiveness is the most powerful way. Now that you are a wonderful parent there might be some aspect of your situation when you were young that might make sense and to why your mom did what she did. You are right...food is totally tricky. I think that kids our age have been in the worst bell curve of learning about food...we had the tail end of the 50's "easy to make food," into the 60's where food manipulation became more prominent, and then in the 70's the advent of the fast food industry where food literally got torn apart and re-constituted. Maybe now we are at some crossroads where we realize what we have been doing is no longer sustainable or advantageous for long term health....for anybody...especially since most of the land is contaminated partially or wholly by our love of chemicals. I struggle all the time with food, especially with kids....I am neither genetically gifted nor a genetic freak. There is food that is "good" for us and food that is "fun." It's the fun stuff that kills me. I can rationalize all that I want to the "I never had this as a kid...some I am not going to deprive my kids of it" but that's just bullshit...cuz then I feel like I am poisoning them on purpose...or with at least knowledge that I am doing so. I think the best we can do is give choices, educate, and show them the difference, not only in taste, but in quality and quantity. Thanks for your kind thoughts, you have always been a real friend! Love to you and the fam!

Thanks for sharing Chuck. I too find that just writing things down is a tremendous help. Somehow just putting it out there to the Universe. I have had to do this several times in my life. I still do it, mostly with my feeling regarding my Mother and being abandoned. I just can't bring myself to tell her how I REALLY feel. She is going to be 80 soon and I know she will not see it the way I do. And I don't want to hurt her. Food is a tricky thing isn't it? I think it is interesting to hear it from a man's perspective because it is usually women who we hear it from. I hope you come to terms with it and that writing about it helps. I love you either way! You never seemed chunky to me but then again I was a REAL friend. tee hee. Love you lots and I will read whatever you write...good, bad or ugly. Love you for WHO you are! ~always your friend~

I KNOW I have to keep moving, but it's so f----- hard to move when I'm in agonizing pain. I get stuck - literally and figuratively - and can't even think straight. Yet I've learned that the 'movements' - when I do them with attention and awareness - can feel good and offer relief. There are frequently days when, if I could, I would spend more time lying on the floor than I do standing or sitting...

Everyone can be affected by back pain, but it's more common in those who are overweight or who sit slouching for long periods of time.

Back pain can occur at any age, but the peak time is between the ages of 45 and 59. Men and women tend to be affected equally.

What's the treatment?
The road to recovery is individual and you'll have to work out (with some medical help) what suits you. However, there are a few general points.

Seek specialist help as early as possible, when treatment is most effective, and before acute problems become chronic.
In the acute stages, some treatments help most people. Regular and effective pain relief is essential.
For the first two to three days after a sudden injury, take painkillers at fixed intervals as directed on the label - don't wait for the pain to kick in before taking the next dose. If this isn't enough to control the pain, get advice from your pharmacist or doctor.
Applying alternate hot and cold compresses to the affected area may also help relieve pain.
It's recommended you remain as active as possible rather than lying flat on your back for days on end, unless specifically advised otherwise by your doctor.
